Thesis. Reality shows have gained much prominence in the last few years, particularly among Indian audiences, with arguably unique and unscripted format, non-actors, a process of continuous monitoring and neoliberal values. Concept. Being a relatively new phenomenon, its content, representation and influence are yet to be explored in academia. This study seeks to analyse the issues of gender and identity in the Indian reality show Bigg Boss, exploring how it reflects and perpetuates the dynamics of societal standards and individual expression. Results and conclusion. It aims to explore how the issues of normative framework around gender roles and expectations influence the way housemates navigate their identities. By randomly selecting audio-visual content from various seasons, and using media and feminist theories, the study examines housemates’ engagement in daily chores, participation in the tasks and interaction with each other to ascertain how gendered behaviour and appearances are interpreted and regulated with the show format. Originality. The study concludes that Bigg Boss encompasses a complex interplay of gender roles and identities, while upholding neoliberal values of individualism, competitiveness and agency.
