This paper explores the spatial relationships between Chalcolithic settlements and funerary caves in the Lisbon Peninsula (Portugal), employing GIS-based cost surface modelling, Least Cost Path analysis, and Tobler’s Hiking Function. Using a focused case-study approach, we model potential paths connecting domestic and mortuary spaces, revealing patterns of accessibility, symbolic appropriation, and spatial memory across varied landscapes. Results indicate multiple configurations, ranging from proximate, contemporaneous uses (e.g. Lexim and Leceia), to diachronic reappropriations and ritualized distances (e.g. Paço and Moita da Ladra). The analysis highlights how physical terrain and topographic barriers shaped the spatial logic of burial practices during the 3rd millennium BC. Moreover, the reuse of caves and the asynchronous relationship between sites reflect long-term engagements with the landscape as a medium of identity and social memory. By articulating environmental, chronological, and spatial proxies, this research contributes to broader debates in Landscape Archaeology regarding territorial structuring, mortuary practice, and the semantics of movement.
