The reviewed monograph by Yu. A. Korol is a comprehensive study of the professional career of the British entrepreneur and engineer Leslie Urquhart (1874–1933). Drawing on his extensive experience in the mining and metallurgical industry, the author analyses the formation of a concession-based business empire in the eastern regions of Russia in the early twentieth century. According to the reviewers, a fundamental value of the work lies in the introduction into scholarly circulation of previously unpublished archival documents, which make it possible to verify production indicators and to reinterpret Urquhart’s activities beyond the ideological clichés of Soviet historiography. The book examines in detail strategies of vertical integration, the implementation of advanced pyrometallurgical technologies, and the development of social infrastructure, which laid the foundations for the industrial framework of these regions. The author also draws parallels between the industrial challenges of the past and contemporary modernization processes, using the example of the Russian Copper Company to demonstrate the continuity of managerial practices. It is concluded that the monograph represents a significant contribution to the history of science and technology, offering valuable analytical material for both professional historians and specialists in the metallurgical sector.
