The arrival of an embassy from the West African kingdom of Allada in Paris 1670 was a rather singular event in its time. Tracing the embassy’s origins and its journey within the Atlantic world, the essay addresses three main points: First, it demonstrates how actors outside ‘official’ diplomatic elites, here the representatives of trading companies, could assume diplomatic roles. Secondly, the embassy serves as an example to look more closely at the functioning of diplomacy as intercultural practice. Taking an interactionist view of culture, the essay focuses, above all, on the role of knowledge and its strategic (non-)use. Thirdly, special regard is paid to the aspect of ceremonial and its ambivalent meanings between universality and insights in relativity.
