People who are both homeless and living with severe mental disability face many difficulties. To better understand the experiences of such individuals, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 adults who had a recent history of homelessness and were recruited through a mental health center. Using the Constant Comparative Method of analysis uncovered barriers such as distrust and fear on the part of the individuals who needed help, as well as a high frequency of inconsistent or insufficient income. On an organizational level, inexperience and turnover of mental health workers created further obstacles to treatment. Respondents were also burdened by a societal stigma against homelessness and mental illness. Conclusions show support for the importance of a single helping individual, availability of one's private space, and the instrumental role of a mental health agency in providing a place of safety.
