Resumo

This article explores the concepts of beinghood and personhood among indigenous peoples of Amazonia, challenging traditional anthropological notions of individual identity. Santos-Granero argues for a "constructional" approach, emphasizing the fluid and relational nature of personhood, shaped by social interactions and cosmological beliefs. He examines how indigenous Amazonians actively construct and negotiate their identities and social roles within a dynamic network of human and non-human agents. The article focuses on the processes of "people-making," highlighting the rituals, practices, and exchanges that transform beings into persons within specific socio-cosmic contexts. Through ethnographic examples, Santos-Granero demonstrates how personhood is not a fixed attribute but an ongoing process of becoming, embedded in a complex web of relationships and subject to continuous renegotiation. The article concludes with a "perspectival coda" that considers the implications of this constructional approach for understanding indigenous ontologies and challenging Western assumptions about the nature of the self.
