Resumo

This article explores the value of performative acts, focusing on how such acts create value and meaning within specific social and cultural contexts. Drawing on ethnographic examples, particularly from Madagascar, Lambek examines the relationship between ritual, language, and action, arguing that performative acts are not simply reflections of pre-existing values but actively constitute them. He considers the role of intentionality, convention, and efficacy in shaping the value of performative acts, and discusses how these acts can be understood as both constitutive and transformative of social relations. The article also addresses the challenges of analyzing performative acts across cultural boundaries and the ethical implications of such analysis.
