Resumo
Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork among the Yukaghirs of Siberia, Rane Willerslev's Soul Hunters offers a radical new perspective on animism and personhood. Willerslev argues that animistic ontologies are not simply systems of belief but practical ways of being in the world, intimately connected to the Yukaghirs' hunting practices. He challenges the conventional anthropological understanding of animism as a projection of human qualities onto non-human entities, showing instead how personhood is negotiated and distributed among humans, animals, and spirits through the act of hunting. Willerslev's work reveals the complex and dynamic nature of animistic worldviews, highlighting the importance of interspecies relationships and the ethical dimensions of hunting in shaping Yukaghir social life and cosmology.
