Resumo
This paper analyzes the economic and social life of the Tiv of central Nigeria, focusing on their system of exchange and investment. Bohannan describes the Tiv's multicentric economy, which is divided into three spheres of exchange: the subsistence sphere, the prestige sphere, and the rights-in-persons sphere. Each sphere operates with its own distinct set of valuables and moral principles. He argues that the Tiv strive to convert lower-ranking valuables into higher-ranking ones, a process he terms 'conveyance.' This system, however, is constantly threatened by the potential for 'misconveyance,' where valuables are improperly transferred between spheres. The study highlights the importance of understanding indigenous categories of value and exchange to comprehend economic behavior in non-Western societies and contributes to broader anthropological discussions of gift exchange, reciprocity, and social structure.
