Resumo
This article presents a typology of Latin American peasantry, classifying them into three main types: image of limited good, peasant society, and closed corporate peasant community. Wolf argues that these types are not mutually exclusive and can coexist within a single region. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the specific historical and social context in which each type emerges, focusing on the relationship between peasants and the larger society, particularly the market system and power structures. The typology is intended as a preliminary framework for further research and analysis of Latin American peasantries.
