Though peasants adhere to each of four major religious traditions, problems common to peasant life find expression in similar ritual observances. This emerges most clearly among those peasant communities with patrilineal household arrangements. Common religious practices include household shrines, periodic ancestral rituals, and rituals that tie the family to the land. The recurrence of these forms is seen as a response to the tensions derived from this form of family life which such ritual counteracts
