Resumo
Through an examination of exclusive straight sister‐exchange in which cross‐cousin marriage at the next generation is explicitly forbidden, it is demonstrated that the transition from elementary to complex structures can be effected differently from the way deduced by Claude Levi‐Strauss. Levi‐Strauss' evolutionary scheme is only one of several possibilities of passing from elementary to complex structures. Other possibilities are suggested, and the idea of a necessary evolutionary process is rejected. [sister‐exchange, cross‐cousin marriage, kinship theory, elementary structures, complex structures, bridewealth]
