Resumo
Verbal art and performance are highly valued in the Belizean Creole speech community. In this paper we define and describe a number of types of verbal artistic performances that occur in ongoing conversations and show the importance of indirection in Belizean speech. These performances serve functions in addition to the poetic and are similar in both their form and function to verbal performances in other African‐American speech communities.
