Resumo
This paper analyzes the hegemonic state of play between the local culture of a village in Anuradhapura District, Sri Lanka, and the dominant ideology of Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism. It focuses on a government housing project that was started in the village in 1978. This project provided numerous opportunities for the authoritative propagation of the dominant ideology, but the manner of its implementation violated local cultural norms and caused a serious rupture in the village community.
