Resumo
This review essay discusses Claude Meillassoux's book "The Anthropology of Slavery: The Womb of Iron and Gold." Kopytoff critiques Meillassoux's analysis of slavery, particularly his focus on the reproduction of slaves as the defining characteristic of the system. While acknowledging the importance of Meillassoux's work in challenging traditional views of slavery, Kopytoff argues that his narrow focus on reproduction overlooks other crucial aspects, such as the diverse forms of slavery and the agency of enslaved people. He also questions Meillassoux's generalizations about African societies and their relationship to slavery. Kopytoff concludes by suggesting a more nuanced approach to understanding slavery that considers its varied historical and cultural contexts.
