The intellectual lineage of the island model particularly associated with British functionalism is traced to Darwinian biogeography, from which it was abstracted in the 1920s; at that time both the patronage structure and the intellectual ecology of the discipline altered fundamentally. Darwinian biogeography itself is grounded in its sociohistorical context-in the problem of acclimatization raised by human population movements, particularly those associated with colonialism.
