The Role of Cities in the Economic Development of the Lower South

THIS ARTICLE DEFINES major political and demographic characteristics of an economically underdeveloped region-he Lower Mississippi Delta. It focuses on the relationship of the major Delta port cities, their periphery, and the effects of five major past federal and state intervention efforts in explaining rural underdevelopment in the Delta region. Discussion of recent attempts at regional cooperation in the Lower Mississippi Delta is contrasted to past intervention efforts and cultural-political realities, [regionalism, port cities, underdevelopment, economic growth and development, U.S. federal and state interventions
