This article is an exploration of the problem ofmarginality in relation to women's experience of self. Among the Gurungs of Nepal, many women struggled with two disjunctions in experience: one growing out of physical and emotional dislocations that took place at marriage, and the other related to a portrait of life in society that failed to address central features of their experience. The failure of the dominant ideology to accommodate women's experience was in part addressed in another idiom, that of a set of cultural symbols that women could (and did) imaginatively engage to express their inner feelings. The analysis reveals ways in which patriarchies and the constructions of the world that accompany them subordinate women, distance them from valued spheres of power, and omit or mute features of their experience that conflict with the ideologies that support male dominance. It demonstrates the value of the symbolic idiom elaborated by women as a vehicle for confronting and integrating aspects of experience not generally elaborated in Gurung representations of self
