Advances in the decipherment of Classic Period (A.D. 300-900) Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions have made it possible to use discourse analysis to investigate the literary style of Maya monuments. This article discusses the identification of protagonists whose names have been deleted from key passages for dramatic effect, using current knowledge of Classic Maya discourse, including verb morphology, syntax, episodic structure of narrative texts, the rhetorical devices of foregrounding and backgrounding, and the elaboration of linguistic structures surrounding peak events
