Resumo
The principal goal of this article is to make specific suggestions regarding how to enhance community‐based tourism development and conservation in tourist destinations with heterogeneous social and cultural contexts and fragile environments. The article uses the example of the Bay Islands, Honduras, to demonstrate the obstacles and opportunities for integrated community‐based tourism and conservation. These recommendations stem directly from almost twenty years of research efforts in the region and are among the major conclusions of my recent book, The Other Side of Paradise: Tourism, Conservation, and Development in the Bay Islands (Stonich 2000).
