This essay develops recent studies on international labor migrations. The first part analyzes the condition for the emergence of migrations as a labor system: the consolidation of the world economic system. The second part examines how state formation creates the conditions for immigrant labor as a distinct category in the labor process. The third part discusses the growing presence of immigrant labor in the tertiary sector of all core countries and its relationship to the export of manufacturing plants to the periphery; the labor flows generated by accelerated industrialization in the Arab oil-exporting countries; and the increased commodification of immigrants in labor import and export policies
