Resumo

The aim of this piece is to explore the relationship between unconditional basic income (UBI) and predistribution. It will do so by proceeding in the following steps. Firstly, we offer a characterisation of predistribution. Secondly, we will explore the extent to which the disbursement of an unconditional basic income is aligned with the objectives of predistribution. This piece will then seek to dispel concerns with unconditional basic income that are based on an alleged disincentive to work and on the inflationary risks of the policy. Finally, the paper will argue that UBI is a superior predistributive policy to the State as Employer of Last Resort (SELR).
