O paradigma cultural da modernidade está em vias de extinguir-se, sustenta o autor, para em seguida examinar esse processo de transição, denominado 'pós-modernidade' à falta de melhor termo. Um aspecto central dessa transição, que o autor examina, é o da desintegração da idéia moderna de uma racionalidade abrangente em inúmeras mini-racionalidades. Conclui-se que só no plano 'local' pode-se fazer frente à irracionalidade 'global
