At the end of January 2005, Michel Pialoux took Vera Telles and Robert Cabanes on a visit to Sochaux-Montbeliard, a region home to Peugeot's head factory since the 1930s. The two researchers - she Brazilian, he French, partners in a research project conducted in the outskirts of Sao Paulo and interested in the Brazil-France contrast - wanted to learn on the ground about the places, situations and people appearing in the books and articles published by Michel Pialoux and Stephane Beaud. In this text, Robert Cabanes produces a report on this visit. Using the almost personal tone of a field diary, based on the simple stories collected during the visit, the author discusses some of the key issues relating to the places and meanings of work in today's world
