Tomo alguns autores (Darwin, Mantegazza, Herskovits, Willems e Bastide) como chaves para a construção do Rio Grande do Sul como um campo etnográfico. A partir de textos originais destes antropólogos, mapeio as características básicas daquilo que passa a ser identificado como uma área cultural. A problemática da diferença, face a uma suposta homogeneidade cultural nacional, é o ponto central que organiza e identifica o Sul como um constructo antropológico
