Film katastrofe poseduje jasnu žanrovsku formulu i narativne konvencije koje su stabilne skoro čitav vek i koje na izuzetan način manifestuju različite društvene anksioznosti. Međutim, tokom druge decenije XXI veka evidentan je određeni transfer konvencija i klišea filma katastrofe koji se sve više koriste u drugim žanrovima. U tom pomeranju i upotrebi imaginarijuma destrukcije i zadovoljstva prizorima kataklizmi, moguće je potražiti refleksije tenzija i društvenih promena kroz koje prolazi savremeno društvo Zapada. Najširi kontekst u koji će ta promena biti smeštena jeste kultura straha, kao specifičan interpretativni okvir u kome katastrofe, sekularni apokaliptični imaginarijum i end times narativi imaju ulogu dekonstrukcije, ali i rekonstrukcije, trenutnih kulturno-političkih poredaka i ideoloških matrica
