The article examines how the construction of tourist spaces in San Miguel de Allende, known as the 'Heart of Mexico,' perpetuates socioeconomic inequalities despite its image as a driver of development. To this end, an ethnographic approach is employed that includes 96 interviews, 96 surveys, and observation guides with collaborators from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, allowing for a dense description of local dynamics. The findings reveal that tourism exacerbates disparities by concentrating benefits in the hands of a few, while the local population faces marginalization and exploitation. It is argued that tourism policies must be inclusive to promote equitable development. In conclusion, tourism should be a tool for social well-being, benefiting all stakeholders involved equitably
