The authors, one a psychiatrist and the other a pediatrician, have in their clinical work been close observers of the behavior of children, (a) in the examining room interacting with the examiner or therapist, and (b) in the waiting room with parents and others. In the clinical context, careful observation and recording of behavior is of utmost importance, for it provides crucial evidence for or against any given formulation of a child's emotional difficulty. The formulation of a problem provides the rationale for therapeutic maneuvers and it may be modified in many ways as the therapist grows to know a child more thoroughly through his repeated careful use of observation and recording
