The Hokkien village of Hsin Hsing where the writer carried on field research for 16 months in 1957 and 1958, is in Chang-hua Hsien (county) on the west-central coastal plain of Taiwan. It is a wet-rice agricultural village whose population of 650 persons comprises descendants of Chinese who emigrated approximately 170 years ago from Fukien (near Amoy) in southeastern China
