The present study was undertaken for the purpose of exploring the meaning of certain values related to work and the job in contemporary American culture. There has been much speculation about the importance of the success ethic in the world of work. We wanted to determine how important it was in one empirical case and what values were related to it. We particularly wanted to know what happened to the emphasis upon advancement when it appeared to be unobtainable
