Many analyses of patient-physician rapport, in folk societies in the process of sociocultural change, have focussed on the sociological structuring of the relationship, as influenced by conflicting value systems. Rarely has the folk cure been studied, not merely to determine the pharmaceutical efficacy of the medicinal compounds or to determine etiological concepts, but to delineate the symbolism that is implicit in the form (e.g., liquid-solid) of the folk medicine. This paper will attempt to illustrate the importance of such an approach, with particular reference to Grand Cayman, in the British West Indies
