Social science researchers have, to an increasing extent, been moving into clinical settings, such as mental hospitals, general hospitals, child guidance clinics, and social work agencies, and into other professional settings, such as schools and courts. It is well known that problems arise when a social science researcher enters a clinical agency or some other professional setting. What we are interested in exploring is whether there are similarities in the problems faced by researchers and practitioners in these professional agencies, and whether certain of these problems stem from the organizational structure of the professional agency. We shall deal primarily with the relationships between researchers and practitioners in health and welfare agencies, under those conditions where only one or a few researchers are part of a larger agency.1 We feel, however, that our remarks have implications for research endeavors in any professional agency
