In these brief comments I want to describe the natural history of a consulting relationship with a government agency typical of those I have observed over the past several years, and to point out some of the problems involved in such relationships. I think that these problems may go a long way towards explaining the peripheral role which anthropology has today in public affairs. Following this, I would like to suggest some ways in which we could increase the impact of the profession in those programs where anthropology could be put to good use
