In the summer of 1958, I entered the deprived Negro area of West Heights in order to increase the ability of its residents to deal effectively with the problems of their environment. I had pursued this aim previously under trade union and union educational auspices. This time, however, I acted on my own. My volunteer status, as a neighbor housewife, did not appear to alter my task other than to create a slightly greater-than-normal bewilderment about my motives
