In an earlier paper dealing with the impact of technological change on the medical practices of some villagers in North India, I conceptualized a distinction between chronic nonincapacitating dysfunctions and critical incapacitating dysfunctions. By chronic nonincapacitating dysfunction were meant, conditions manifesting drawn-out periods of suffering, sometimes cyclical in character, usually not fatal (or fatal by slow degrees), and only partially debilitating (enabling the sufferer to maintain a semblance of his daily routine).1
