Until a few years ago the insufficiency of tillable land was one of south Italy's most critical problems. Today the situation has so changed that in some places, given present work habits and technology, the land supply by far exceeds the demand. The evident cause of this previously inconceivable turn of events lies in a flow from the farms which has gradually assumed the dimensions of a veritable exodus. Many towns of the south have been almost totally abandoned or at best reduced to waiting colonies of the aged, women, and children. In some places, the people depart as if a scourge were relentlessly pursuing them from the country. Thus, throughout south Italy there are numerous villages whose population has been more than halved by emigration since the end of World War II
