Urban migration of non-Westernized, traditional people seeking the benefits of modern industrial society has become a worldwide phenomenon and a problem that will increasingly tax the understanding and insight of both theoretical and applied social scientists. Research into the general area of urban migration and adjustment is extensive and accumulating rapidly. But the difficulty of knowing in advance when a new migrant is expected in a city generally prevents longitudinal studies of migrants bearing on the process of their adjustment to the new setting from the time of their arrival through the crucial first few months
