In a survey of attitudes of mental hospital personnel in Lima, Peru by Stein and Oetting, professional psychiatric personnel tended to have humanistic attitudes, similar to those of their North American and British counterparts. The hospital attendants or aides seemed to derive their attitude structure more directly from their cultural milieu, expressing custodial attitudes that tended to be congruent with Peruvian value systems. The research was carried out with professional and sub-professional personnel in four contexts: two public psychiatric hospitals, the psychiatric division of a general hospital, and a private psychiatric hospital. An adapted version of Gilbert and Levinson's Custodial Mental Illness Ideology Scale was presented to a sample of 240 subjects (126 attendants, 30 nurses, 26 psychiatric physicians, 23 administrative workers, and 35 social workers) by social workers of the Peruvian National Department of Mental Hygiene during September-October, 1962.
