The degree of congruence between cultural understandings and cultural behavior is significant consideration in the study of social change. Acceptance of new practices depends in part upon the integration of given set of acts with understanding of the significance of those acts. In medical practices, diagnosis and cure provide clearcut frame in which the link between behavior and cognition can be analyzed. Once the illness has been classified, regimen of curing can be initiated. Since the modes of classifying diseases are so immediately related to programs for eliminating them, medicine and curing have provided particularly interesting area for working out, in Anthony Wallace's terms, a set of related rules [which] forms calculus which describes cognitive process
