Various studies have been focused on the relative abilities of individuals or groups to delay gratification. Cultural factors have often been found to influence the frequency of the administration of self-rewards. Other factors have been explored as well: Mischel found that Trinidadian delinquents were less likely to delay rewards than nondelinquents. Holmberg attributes the Siriono inability to delay gratification to a chronic shortage of food; Mischel and D'Andrade found that children who came from father-absent households were likely to choose smaller, more immediate rewards rather than to postpone gratification in order to obtain larger rewards. The present study attempts to extend these findings by examining the effect of such factors as changing environments, loss of prediction, and relative age on the tendencies of groups to delay gratification
