Professor George Foster's conceptualizations concerning the nature of interpersonal relations in peasant society are stimulating guidelines for continuing research. However, data collected in the small Guatemalan peasant village of San Miguel Milpas Altas suggest that several of Foster's ideas - basic to his model of peasant society - need refinement, modification, and testing. The data from San Miguel contain at least two implications for this model. These concern the relatively great importance Foster attributes to population size as a factor in determining the quality of interpersonal relations in a community and, conversely, his lack of emphasis on this same variable in relation to forces making for cohesion and stability in a peasant community
