While the literature on peasants in Eastern Europe has at times emphasized the "almost innate rebelliousness of the peasants," scholars concerned with the possibilities for rural development in Latin America have, on the whole, given little attention to the dynamic revolutionary potentialities of the peasantry. On the contrary, they have often deemphasized these aspects while stressing various forms of "resistance to change" by traditional peasants. Foster's "image of the limited good" and Erasmus' "encogido syndrome" are among the concepts that have become fashionable in characterizing the conservatism of Latin American peasants
