In the last two decades, a great deal of research has been conducted on the problems of managing, utilizing, and motivating professional technical resources in complex bureaucratic organizations. Results of studies of scientists are usually mixed up with those of studies of engineers and other groups of technical manpower, and the net outcome is some generalizations about professionals with no clear distinction between these groups. This paper reports on a study conducted to inquire into the role perception of scientists working in the research laboratory of a leading industrial organization as a group distinct from engineers.
