Social and Psychological Factors in Teaching Farming

The organization of farming among the Plateau Tonga of Zambia is described in the first part of this paper after which a case study is reported which describes an attempt by an agricultural extension worker to introduce new methods of pig husbandry. The response of the farmers was marked by two factors which limited the effectiveness of the new methods. The first factor arises from the relationship between tribal farmers and government officials; the second factor from the relationships between the farmers themselves. The relationship between farmers and government officials shows a tendency to break down into hostility or withdrawal due to misunderstandings about what each can expect from the other. The relationships between the farmers themselves put constraints on younger men not to succeed too well at their farming activities. Both these factors are impediments to the utilization of resources for greater agricultural productivity
