Unless a research design is structured by thinking, the use of computers may be worthless and even harmful. This paper demonstrates the use of algorithmic thinking through an operational analysis of the rural exodus in Western Europe-a phenomenon of interest both to social scientists and to government officials. Demographic, social, and economic data-drawn, in this case, from several Swiss Alpine villages-are important variables in many situations of rapid culture change. The suggested operational approach guides decision-making as to what kinds of data to gather, how to process them, and how to use data that have been gathered and processed by others
