In this paper, based on an extensive review of both the published and unpublished literature and written within the context of theories concerning women's roles, practical suggestions are made as to how women can be effectively involved in water and sanitation programs as acceptors, users, managers, and diffusers (or change agents) of new technologies. Concrete examples of each are drawn from field experience
