Economic development strategies based on efforts to stimulate industrial growth, even when oriented toward labor-intensive techniques, appear to be insufficient to absorb the rapidly expanding labor force in many underdeveloped countries. Therefore, increasing numbers of people will have to enter nonindustrial sectors in search of employment. Careful attention needs to be given to the occupational decisions of individuals and households pursuing various income-generating activities. This paper provides an assessment of the role of the food marketing system in Davao City in increasing local income and generating employment. While a large expansion of the urban labor force has taken place during the past decade, traditional sales occupations, heavily oriented toward food marketing activities, have expanded their share of the urban labor force. This has occurred with small initial capital requirements and has provided adequate earnings for an expanding portion of the urban labor force
