The Case of Blind People in Israel

Observations were made on a population of Israeli adults blinded in childhood, and on the social circles in which blind people were active. Many blind people entertained negative stereotypes of other blind people. These stereotypes were particularly harsh with respect to the issue of accepting aid on the part of the able-bodied. The social circles were essentially homogeneous, in terms of social attributes other than disability. The conclusion is that the force of segregation in Israel leads many blind people into social niches of their own, but that it is not so potent as to overcome differences of social categories among the blind. Blindness as such is, in Israel, an attribute that does not lead people to associate, but in conjunction with other attributes it often does
