As US companies strive to compete in the global marketplace, managers who in the past never left the home office must now work with foreign colleagues. This paper provides a theoretical framework integrating culture, total quality, participant observation, and ethnography which has been integrated into a learning process for US-based managers and scientists who work with foreign colleagues. It discusses how Pharmco, a pharmaceutical subsidiary of a major US multinational, developed processes by which US-based managers and scientists learn to operate successfully in Japan and are using the learned processes in other cultures. It discusses the methods used by an anthropologically trained manager to demonstrate the need to learn anthropological tools and to use them to advantage in the business world. Empirical evidence indicates the success of the program
