The survey of churches and church members sponsored by the National Council of Churches (NCC) is the most comprehensive and reliable data source of its kind. It is a very valuable tool in the study of the geographical distribution of denominations by counties in the USA. However, its major weakness is its failure to count the many independent congregations of the Baptist, the Holiness, and the Pentecostal churches. This study of 30 countries in middle Tennessee examines that weakness by comparing the NCC data with the Tax Assessors' records in these counties
